I was trying to remember if the key to the room was in my pocket or if I'd left it on top of the vending machine, so I didn't notice the pretty woman with the video camera until she was right in front of me. She was filming the bottle of juice in my hand, so I flipped it up in the air, catching it.
"Ooh, very nice," she said to herself. Em had this funny habit of talking out loud. I didn't think she had any idea that she did it, she just got so caught up in taking pictures that she stopped paying attention to anything else. "Cutie. Nice tattoos " She panned up to my face and shrieked.
"Hi, Em," I smiled.
She put down the video camera and looked at me, shocked. "Nick fucking Carter? What are you Oh. My. God." Em Evesham had the prettiest eyes, long lashes. They were the sort of eyes that changed color with her mood and what she was wearing, today they were greeny gray. I filed that away to tease Kevin with later, he was going to be completely jealous that I was going to hang with her.
"I'm here with Rachel," I told her, as she continued to blink at me.
"Are you here with Rachel, or just friends?" She grinned at the surely lovesick expression on my face. "Nevermind. Excellent. Yes, brilliant." She hugged me and I hugged her back, relieved. Another friend's approval. James and Em had to outweigh Jeremy's opinion, right?
"Are you here to see her, or are you just testing out the video?" I teased her as she stepped away from me.
"I'm here to plot with her, of course. Lola told me she was in 1412?"
I held up the key that was thankfully in my pocket and opened the door.
"Hey! I'm half naked in here!" Rachel yelled as I stuck my head in the door.
"Just the way I like you," I grinned, holding out her juice. She took it with a kiss and I stepped in the door. "I have another surprise for you..." I said as Em followed me in.
Rachel squealed, throwing her arms around her friend and I took the juice from her hand before it sailed across the room. I walked around them and took Em's video, too, I don't think she even noticed.
Girls were so funny. They hugged like they hadn't seen each other in years, talking a mile a minute, I couldn't even understand what they were saying. I went over to sit on the bed, taking a drink of Rachel's juice as I watched them. Em was almost as tall as me, did Rachel disappear into my hugs the way she was doing with Em? After a minute, they moved apart and Em gave her the once over.
"Ok, the purple bra is not gonna fly with the censors."
Rachel scowled at her. "I know. What the hell am I gonna wear, though?"
"Whatever the stylist tells you," I said, playing with Em's camera. Totally cool. Way better than mine. Em snatched it out of my hands, dropping into the chair across from my perch on the bed.
"No
stylist."
He gave her such a horrified look that Em and I both burst into laughter. Em held up her video camera. "You're looking at the video, dude. I am the entire crew." She grinned at me. "They can't afford anyone else."
I rolled my eyes at her, going back to the closet. This video might be the most important thing we ever did, what was I going to wear?
"No stylist?" he asked. "What are you " Evidently when I told him we were doing a video today he had an entirely different concept of it than I did. "But this is important!" he finally managed, and Em and I smiled at one another.
"That's why I'm here," Em informed him calmly.
"But " he couldn't wrap his mind around it, like so many things in my life.
"Yeah, Nick, and you guys weren't going to be on the cover of Rolling Stone with your pants around your ankles. Don't worry. I'll take care of her. I see VMA's! International airplay! Video of the year!"
I loved Em. We giggled together and even Nick managed a smile. He'd just been telling me last night how much he liked her, and how good she was. There was no way we'd ever be able to afford her if she wasn't doing this practically for free. Thank god she was my friend.
She got up, standing at the closet with me. "So, in the conference room we have Lola, who rocks-"
"Doesn't she? I love having a tour manager." Black silk shirt? Too hot.
"Amber from the label "
I groaned. "I have to hide Nick from her. She's going to leak it to everyone and make this a media circus."
Em nodded, reaching for a shirt. "So noted. I'll cut her loose. Isn't this my shirt?"
"You gave it to me!" It was my favorite white shirt, a Kate Sutton original. It probably cost more than my entire wardrobe combined. It also had no buttons. Nick got a little impatient last night.
"And my assistant Sylvia. Who is very nice, but useless. Shall I throw a diva?"
"Diva?" Nick asked. I glanced over at him, he was leaning back on the bed, watching us. I had to get Em to take some pictures of him for me, she took the best pictures.
She grinned at him. "You have seen me diva." Moving away from me, she stomped her foot, putting on an annoyed voice. "Out! Everyone but the band, out! You're distracting me!"
Nick's eyebrows went up as he watched her, and she dropped the act, laughing. "Yeah, that's how I got you to drop your pants. You think your label guys would have ever let that happen? Diva I shall, and we will make the video we need to make. Now, wear this!"
She pulled out my 'wanton sex goddess' tank, thrusting it at me. She was right. Perfect. I pulled it over my head, smiling at Nick. "Your nickname for me is gonna be famous, baby."
He shook his head. "Nope, you can't wear that."
"Why not?"
"Because you're entirely too hot. The whole world is going to be lusting after you, I don't think I can handle the competition." We grinned at one another and Em groaned.
"Oh, stop! So, dish, how did this happen?" She sat back in her chair, propping her feet up on the bed. "Last I heard there was singing in the middle of a park in Philadelphia."
"Does Bayley ever keep a secret?" I wondered, going in to the bathroom to find my make-up.
"Was it a secret? Doesn't matter, she doesn't have any from me."
"It wasn't a secret, I guess." I considered my face in the mirror. Was Em going to be able to do anything with this?
"It should be," Nick protested. "You rejected me!"
"My god, Rachel, do you have nerves of steel? Bay told me she would have jumped him, and she's twice his age."
"Ten years is not twice my age!" Nick whined. He hated it when I teased him about being a baby.
"Of course not, sweetie. Isn't it nice to know that you can turn an old lady into Jell-O, though?" Em cooed at him, making him smile, I could see it in the mirror. "So what happened?"
"After the AJ thing, I took him up to the Point-" I started, but Em jumped in.
"The Point house? Oh, Nick, you are so lucky. Did you love it?"
I smiled at her. "It was awesome. Just what I needed." In every way imaginable.
"How is my second favorite Alex James?" She always called AJ that, since her husband's name was Alex James. Her tone was concerned, the same tone everyone had when they asked about him now.
"He's good. Honestly, he's good. He'll be back, the show will go on." I didn't want it to go on. I liked being the boyfriend, following Rachel around and not having to do anything but adore her.
"Good. I'll be there, you guys are paying me a fucking fortune to shoot it."
"Yay!" Rachel called. "What's that, twice in a month we'll see each other?" Rachel is planning to be there? OK.
"Bizarre, isn't it?" Em answered. "The fans are gonna blow the roof off the place when AJ appears. It's getting video, too, but I'm not doing that."
"You'll do their video and not ours?" I pouted at her, and she patted my knee.
"Your video is too much for me, love. Sudden Silence, no problem, I can do whatever I want. You guys too much. I'll stick to shooting it. Its gonna be amazing, I can't wait."
"Bring Lexa!" Rachel called out. "I haven't seen her in forever!"
Lexa? Oh, the baby. Em considered it. "Maybe dunno, gotta check with the husband, see what's going on. Want to see pictures in the meantime?"
Rachel joined us, nodding her head at Em.
She was absolutely gorgeous. Her hair was everywhere, and the red streaks she'd done last night looked amazing. In jeans and a tank top, she was the sexiest thing I'd ever seen. She was every inch a rock star. They didn't need a video, Em could just film her standing there and everyone would want a copy of the single.
"Speaking of the husband, what happened yesterday?" She sat on the bed next to me, and I pretended to fix her hair, but really I just wanted to touch her. She tossed me a little smile over her shoulder that told me she knew exactly what I was doing before looking back at Em.
Em sighed, rolling her eyes. "I've seen him eat shrimp before. I mean, he's a vegetarian, but sometimes he cheats a little. We don't know if there's something different about American shrimp compared to European, or maybe he just had too many he tried to blame it on crap American beer. Yesterday morning he could barely open his eyes he was so swollen up."
Rachel giggled and Em grinned at her. "Yeah, I've got pictures. I'm a horrible wife. He was acting perfectly normal, he didn't even feel bad, just hot. Luckily Astrid was with us, so she watched Lex and I took Alex to the hospital, but then Astrid had to catch a flight, and Bayley wasn't planning on coming down, but she did, to baby-sit both my babies it was a very long day. Once I knew he would be fine, all I could think was 'I have to be in Chicago!'"
"Em, we would have lived if you'd had to postpone," Rachel said calmly and I had to bite back a laugh. She was freaking out yesterday about the video, if Em had postponed, Rachel would have lost her mind.
Em shook her head. "No, we're on a schedule here if this is still to be considered a summer single. Of course, I had no time to think about what we're doing today. Any ideas?"
Rachel shrugged. "Can I see baby pictures?"
I couldn't believe how much Rachel trusted Em. Em just admitted that she had no clue what we were doing, and Rachel was fine about it. Em pulled out her wallet and tossed it to Rachel. I looked over her shoulder. Em's phone rang and she pulled it out of her pocket. "Oh, right, we're working." She mused before answering it. "Yes? I'm with Rachel, just looking at wardrobe." She sounded so professional. Looking at wardrobe, yeah, right. "Here, wear this," that's all it was. Is that what she did with us? She always seemed so professional, was it all an act?
Em distracted, I kissed Rachel's shoulder, and she smiled at me. "You look amazing, Rache."
She bit her lip the way she did when she was nervous. "Really? This is a big deal, you're right. I trust Em, she just wants us normal and natural, but is that good enough? Maybe we need explosions or something." Alright, maybe she wasn't quite as calm was I thought she was
"Trust Em. She is so right, all anyone needs to see is this face, and you will sell a million copies." She grinned at me for a moment before kissing me. I hoped this was her magic lipstick that never came off.
"Hel-lo!" Em called, and we jumped apart. "Work to do. I have to go and get rid of the label. Rachel, you're coming with me."
She batted her eyelashes at Em, looking innocent. "I need to fix my lipstick."
Em grabbed her arm, pulling her off the bed. "I have the distinct feeling if I leave you here, it will be hours before I get you back."
Rachel and I both pouted at her, making her laugh. "We'll be back, Nick. Are you coming with us, or hiding out here?"
I looked at Rachel. Could I go? Would I be in the way? She smiled at me. "He's coming with, if we can ditch the label whore."
"Give us 15 minutes, then." Em grabbed her camera and forced Rachel out the door without even letting me kiss her again.
Em shut the door behind us and looked at me. "He is fucking adorable!"
I giggled, skipping down the hall to the elevator. "Isn't he just? How could I resist that?"
"He is only 21," she cautioned, hitting the button to call the elevator.
I sighed, leaning against the wall. "He's like Oreos for breakfast. Not very good for you, but it makes your day seem better."
She laughed at me. "You've got it bad."
I whacked her as we stepped onto the elevator. "He tells me you flirt with Kevin."
"Ah, I am an old married woman, I can flirt with the pretty one. I don't sleep with him!"
I leered at her. "Kevin has 8 years on Nick. Sexual prime, baby."
She whimpered. "I could so go there, its terrible. I've watched the boy grow up, I've been doing their pictures for years. I should not have such thoughts about a child!"
"You get over that," I told her. The elevator doors opened as we dissolved into giggles, and Lola was standing there. "I can only imagine what you're talking about."
Em stood up straight, stepping off the elevator. "Locations, of course. Will Amber rise to the bait if I tell her to go scout?"
Lola nodded at her slowly. "Oh god, please."
"Hey, what was this about a change of song?" Em questioned, shooting both of us a look. "I never got to talk to you, Rachel, besides that one phone call a couple of days ago."
I rolled my eyes at her. "Jeremy was trying to pull a star trip. Did the label call you about it?"
She shrugged, glancing down towards the conference room to make sure we wouldn't be interrupted. "Yeah. I told them I had a treatment for 'Come On,' and it was really not worth my time to work up another treatment for another song at the price they were paying me. Well, my manager said that. And then they called back an hour later and said never mind and confirmed my flight details."
I loved Em. Someday, I was going to be able to repay her for all the favors she'd done for me in my lifetime. I didn't know how, or when, but someday I would.
