I hated leaving her. I loved being with her, and we'd had so much fun, making love and talking all night, but now it was morning, and we hadn't slept.
It was so bad the last time, when we hadn't slept, and then had to leave each other. I stole a glance at her as she stood next to me in the elevator. She was holding onto my hand, but talking to Frank like nothing was wrong. Maybe this would be okay. Maybe we'd say good-bye, and she wouldn't end up crying against me.
Why did I feel like crying? Why was this so hard? We had to be grown-ups and fucking figure this out. If it was going to work, we couldn't keep making each other miserable. Everything with Willa was about making each other miserable, I did not want to do that again.
Frank steered us out a back door and there were two cars. One was waiting to take me to the airport and the other - the rock star limo - was waiting to take her to another interview before they left this afternoon to make their show tonight in Tennessee.
"Baby, you hit the big time," I whispered to her, and she giggled.
"I like MTV's dime."
Frank gave us a look and shook his head. "You get two minutes, and I mean that, or we'll miss our flight and Rachel will be late. Then there will be hell to pay."
Rachel let me go for a minute to give him a kiss, and he took her bag, going over to her car. Then the door shut, and we were alone in this quiet hallway. Rachel came back to me, wrapping her arms around my waist and resting her head on my chest. I hugged her, I loved how she fit against me here.
"Thank you so much for coming. I'm so sorry for all our silly fights this week."
"Me too," I admitted. "I love you so much, Rache."
I could feel my voice break, so I stopped talking, and she hugged me tighter. "I love you, too." She looked up, kissing me deeply, and I breathed her in, melting against her.
"Just a couple days," she promised. "We'll be at the VMA's, and that'll rock."
I smiled down at her excited face. I wanted to walk the red carpet with her, but our management had shot that idea down really quickly. It probably wasn't a good idea, but I wanted to be next to her at her first awards show. "I love you. Did I just say that?"
"Yes," she giggled. "But I always like hearing it."
"I love you," I said, kissing her neck and making her laugh. "I love you, I love you, I love you."
"Oh, stop," Frank's voice commanded from behind us. "We have a plane to catch."
I didn't even look at him, just cupped her face in my hands and kissed her one last time. Then she led me down the hallway to our waiting vehicles.
I hated leaving him. At least I didn't break down this time, like I did when I'd had to leave him last time. He got into his car, and I blew him a kiss before going over to mine. Even though I couldn't see them through the tinted windows, I knew everyone was waiting for me inside. I hesitated a second before climbing in, gathering my thoughts and listening for my boys. They were all there, and Lola, just waiting for me. I could tease James about the gossip Nick had told me last night.
"Finally, the diva princess has arrived," Jeremy drawled as I climbed into the car, taking my seat next to James.
Jeremy and Darien were looking at some papers with Lola. James was fidgeting with the radio, drumming his fingers against his leg in time to the pop music coming from the speakers.
"You look well-fucked," he told me with a smile, and I raised an eyebrow at him.
"So do you."
He was caught, and he fucking knew it, but he tried to cover as we started moving. "You are projecting, dear."
"I am not!" I yelled. "You got lucky! Who with? Don't tell me Nick was right!"
Everyone was listening to us now, and James gave up, letting his head fall against the back of the seat. "Right about what?"
"The fact that JC fucking Chasez likes boys."
James met my eyes for a second, but he was just bursting to tell. "Oh, he more than likes them, darling."
I shrieked, moving closer and poking him, "Tell me! Tell me!"
I vaguely heard Jeremy groan across the room. "Oh, not another one " as James started to fill us in with what I hoped were all the gory details.
