"Frank! What are you doing here?" He was in the lobby as Nick and I got off the elevator, and I ran over to hug him.
"I got a new gig," he told me, looking over at Nick as he put me down. "Your boyfriend doesn't need me anymore."
Nick scowled at him. "Don't tell me you're guarding Justin's skinny ass."
"No, I'm guarding your girlfriend."
He was?
"Aw, Frank, I thought you were here for me!" James said, joining us in the lobby. Right. We were here to meet my band for a drink. Frank had distracted me.
"I'm here for all four of you."
"Is that a measure of popularity?" Nick asked. "Because I had you all to myself."
"And why am I here? I was pretty bored lately, hanging out with you."
Nick pouted, but I had to laugh. It was true. Nick hardly ever got hassled any more.
Neither did I. If Frank was here, did that mean we were anticipating hassle? I'd just gotten used to the idea of this tour, too. All I really wanted to do was stay at the Point with Nick. Yesterday, we'd gone to New York, and the doctor had told me I was fine and could resume all normal activities. So Nick and I had spent the night at a beautiful New York hotel and had sex for hours. Why would I want to come back to work after that?
And now we were anticipating crazy fans everywhere. Great.
Of course, no one was bothering us now. I should get over myself.
"The other guys are in the bar. Lola sent me out here to find you two. Well, three with your boy toy. Lola know he's here?"
Had I told Lola I was bringing Nick? I shrugged. "Maybe. Does it matter?"
Frank shrugged back. "Not really. I look out for the crazy Backstreet fans, anyway. I guess I can handle him, too."
He led us into the bar, and I took Nick's hand. I could bring Nick, right? He wasn't staying forever. Being near 'Nsync would drive him crazy before he got bored following me around.
But I wanted him here. We hadn't even talked about it. He just came with me. Was it going to be weird? I'd stopped getting approval for his visits from my band months ago. Did I have to run it by Frank and Lola or 'Nsync's management now?
"What's he doing here?" Jeremy asked, as soon as we found them, and I held Nick's hand tighter.
But before I could answer, another voice did. "Dude, this is a Backstreet free zone! It's part of our rider, isn't it?"
Justin. Great. This tour was going to be one headache after another, wasn't it?
"Absolutely," Chris answered him. "No Backstreet music, none of those dorky Burger King toys, and definitely no Backstreet boys allowed on tour."
I smiled at them. "Then I guess Puffy gets to be your opening act for the rest of the tour."
I loved her. I didn't really care that Justin and Chris were teasing me. It was just something we did to each other whenever our paths crossed. But I loved that Rachel was sticking up for me, anyway.
Justin and Chris exchanged a look. "To get the pretty girl, we have to deal with the Backstreet. Seems like a fair trade," Justin said.
"No way!" Chris disagreed. "With the Backstreet, the girl is off limits. Let's take Nick out, then we get Rachel all to ourselves."
"You wish," Rachel said. I liked hearing that. I knew Justin was going to be flirting with her as soon as my back was turned. Hell, he'd do it when I was standing here.
"Yes, Rachel. I do wish."
See? Flirting already. He gave her that Timberlake smile and she just rolled her eyes, sitting down and pulling me down next to her. "Nice try, Justin, but we all know that JC is my favorite 'Nsync boy. Where is he?"
Did she ask that so that James wouldn't have to? Did the guys in 'Nsync know about him and James?
There still was a James and JC, right? If they'd broken up, I'd know. Rachel would have told me. James knew all my secrets, after all.
Justin and Chris pulled up chairs to the table where Sudden Silence were sitting. "He's probably sleeping," Chris said. "We got in this afternoon."
"Hey!" Darien said, looking at Justin and Chris. "You're the headliners. I was promised that the headliners and the opening act don't mix!"
"That only counts when the opening act is boring and doesn't have a wanton sex goddess."
"Rachel, we're kicking you out. It's bad enough you're dating a Backstreet boy, but now we have to fraternize with NfuckingSync!" Jeremy complained.
"Goddamn pop sensibilities," Darien sighed.
"I didn't see you turning down the paycheck, boys," Rachel said.
"Speaking which, you finked out for a week," Chris said. "Fork it over. Somebody's gotta pay Puffy."
Rachel scowled at him. "What, we don't get sick time in this gig?"
"I keep telling you we should unionize," James said. "We need sick time and a 401k!"
"Yeah!" Darien agreed. "We're sick of working for the man."
"Justin Timberlake is so not the man," I said. I couldn't help myself. "He's barely a pretty boy."
Justin reached over to whack me, and I ducked. "Shut up, Carter. What the hell are you doing here, anyway?"
"I have to suffer through you guys to see my girlfriend. Could you go away and make it a little less painful?"
Chris snickered. "Oh, you never should have said that. We'll be by her side at all times now."
"Like we needed another excuse?" Justin asked him.
"Dudes. You need to get laid," Rachel told them.
"This is the problem with dating the Virgin Queen, Justin," James said, making everyone laugh. Where was Britney? If Justin was going to flirt with my girl, I could do the same to him. I was pretty sure Rachel wouldn't find Britney Spears a threat.
Justin Timberlake wasn't a threat. Was he? Maybe I should hang out for a while, just to be sure.
