"What are you doing, Nick?"
Mom's voice startled me.
"Getting a drink. Is that okay?"
The last thing I needed was Mom fighting with me about drinking. What was I gonna do if I got a little drunk? It's not like I'd fall off the side of the boat or something.
"I mean with Rachel."
I turned away from the bartender, taking a sip of my drink. "What do you mean? She's having fun."
I knew she wasn't, but she kept telling me she was okay. What was I supposed to do about it? Wait - did she talk to my mom? Oh, that was low
"I didn't say she wasn't, but it seems like you two are I don't know. A little tense?"
No, Rachel wouldn't confide in my mom. Not that there was anything to confide. That was our secret. Rachel wouldn't go telling anyone - let alone Mom. Mom would have to be on my side, wouldn't she? I mean she was my mom.
Wait there weren't sides!
"We're fine. She's just unwinding from the tour. She's always beat after the tour."
"I raised two pop stars, you know! I know what the end of the tour is like."
I shared a smile with her about that. I spent so much time being annoyed with her that I sometimes forgot that she could be okay. Rachel kept trying to get me to be more understanding about Mom. She hadn't tried that with Aaron yet. I wanted to be in the room when she did that - it'd be fun to see!
"Coming on the cruise may not have been a good idea. She likes her down time to unwind and get caught up on her sleep and stuff."
"She just wants to be with you, Nick. She doesn't care about all this other stuff."
I knew that! Why was Mom telling me that? Wait, was she telling me not to fuck this up? Did Mom actually like Rachel? They'd gotten on okay when we were in Marathon, but Mom never really liked any of my girlfriends.
As if she could read my mind, she reached out, taking a sip of my drink, "I like her, Nick and just don't want to see you mess this up. Or have it be derailed because of something stupid."
"Like what?"
"You could have some real time together if you were able to do some of the radio shows this summer."
Oh, here it comes. The marketing angle! For a second, I actually thought we were going to have a mother-son talk, but no, this was all business. Did I really have dollar signs attached to my forehead or something?
I did when it came to this family.
Last night, Dad had cornered me to talk about a new engine for the boat and maybe expanding the team. We'd just had our first race! Sure, we'd won and we were all really happy about that but I didn't think that meant we needed to quit our day jobs and race boats full time.
"Radio shows?"
"Yeah, we've been talking about Aaron doing some, and I know Sudden Silence is already booked - they're headlining some of the bigger ones - Boston and Washington. That's got to be so exciting for them."
I nodded. It was, but I doubted Rachel knew as much about their summer schedule as Mom did. My mother was a woman who did her homework.
"Ken and I haven't talked about promotion yet, Mom. We have to get the album finished first."
"Oh, I know this would just be you and Aaron. If you go with him, I'm sure we could get a few more shows booked. That would be good for him, Nick and to keep your name out there. Besides, you could see your brother more regularly. He misses you so much, Nick. Going months without seeing you is hard on him."
Did she really think she was going to guilt me into doing shows with Aaron?
Hell, who was I kidding. It was going to work. I should pack my bags now.
Where'd my relaxed Nick go? When he'd left me to go get drinks, he'd been happy, but now I could see the scowl on his face before he sat down next to me in his deck chair.
Looking beyond him, I saw Jane walking over to Aaron. What was going on now? This family had more drama! Yesterday it'd been Jane and Bob fighting over Aaron. They had such different philosophies of parenting. One minute Jane was telling Aaron to hang with Nick and me, but then the next Bob was yelling at him because we were in the adult pool and he wasn't old enough.
The girls got off easy - no one really paid much attention to them. I'd actually been having fun getting to know Leslie and BJ over the last couple of days. They were cool. Angel still wasn't sure if I was okay or not. She was too much like her twin brother.
"Drinks!" I giggled, trying to lighten the mood. He smiled a little as he handed me my drink, and then pushed his baseball cap down over his eyes.
"Thank you, bunny." I tried again and he just nodded, staring out at the waves on the ocean.
The private island ended up not being so private when the entire ship was on it. We'd come back to the ship for lunch and found the place nearly deserted. Apparently Jane and Bob had figured that out, too. Great.
Even so, the pool was free of Aaron's fans, since he'd stayed on the island to scuba dive. I sort of wanted to do that, but the image of dozens of teenage girls armed with underwater cameras in the water with me was scary. I didn't need hundreds of pictures of my ass underwater in this bikini for the world to see! I already dreaded the stories and photographs that were being beamed back home via the Internet already.
Although to be fair, the girls weren't bugging Nick much. He teased me that I was his 'girl repellant' which was fine by me. Occasionally we'd catch one of them taking a picture, but for the most part they were okay. A few had asked for my autograph, but I thought that was just so they'd have an excuse to be near Nick for longer.
"Okay, what'd she do?"
"Who?"
"Who? Your mother! You left here and you were happy. You come back 20 minutes later and aren't. What happened?"
"I can't be moody, Rache? Do you have the lock on that?"
She looked shocked, but I didn't care. She'd said last night she wasn't getting her period, but I didn't know what the hell it was. Nothing I could do was right. She said she didn't want to ignore my family and go onto the island alone, so we went with everyone. Turns out it was just as crowded on the beach as it was on the ship. That wasn't my fault. I'd only gone out swimming with Aaron a couple of times. The rest of the time I'd laid with her while she read her book on the beach, getting her drinks and hoping that she'd stay happy.
Wait, did she talk to Mom about the radio shows when we were swimming? Was all of that her idea? Was Mom giving her lessons on how to manipulate me behind my back? Wait - if Rachel did want me to be with her for the shows, isn't that good?
I was so confused. This cruise was supposed to be fun! But now I wished I was just back in the studio. I knew how things worked there.
"Can we go in the hot tub?" Rachel asked, interrupting my circular thoughts.
I glanced over at the hot tub. "There are people there."
"Just a couple. We can stay out of their way. They don't look like Aaron fans."
I risked a joke. "They might be parents of an Aaron fan."
"Then they'll have a good story for their kid." She smiled, dropping her towel on a deck chair, and I followed her into the hot tub. We said hello to the other couple, and they just smiled back. No recognition. That was good.
We chatted with the other couple for a minute, about the ship, and what they were drinking, and a waitress came over, so Rachel and I ordered more drinks. The ship had a special drink every day, and Rachel always got that. She didn't care what it was. So far, it had always been something fruity, and she liked girly drinks.
Our new friends left when our drinks appeared, and we were alone in the hot tub. Rachel toasted me. "To cruising."
"Are you having fun?"
She took a sip of her drink and set it on the edge of the tub. "I am now."
"Good." Finally.
She kissed me, tasting sweet from her fruity drink. "I'm sorry, Nick."
"For what?"
"Being a whiney brat. I know I'm being a bitch, and I'm going to stop. You want to be here with your family, and I can't expect all of your attention."
"I know this isn't what you wanted."
She shrugged. "It's not. It probably wasn't a good idea for me to come, but I wanted to be with you, so "
"Why isn't it a good idea that you're here?"
"You know how I am at the end of a tour. I need some down time. I didn't do well with your friends when I got back from Europe in October, remember?"
Yeah. I remembered that. "My friends are jerks, though."
She smiled. "Vinnie is, yeah. Are you talking to him again?"
He shrugged, taking another drink of his beer. "Yeah. Why wouldn't I be?"
Boys. They remembered nothing.
"You punched him in Sweden a month or so ago."
"Oh. That. That was nothing. He said something stupid and I was sick of him."
Nick couldn't meet my eyes, and I sighed. "He really hates me, doesn't he?"
"He wasn't I "
I took his hand. "We have done a great job of not talking the last couple of months. Let's stop that. I can handle it if Vinnie doesn't like me, bunny. Really."
I would be a lot happier if Nick would stop being friends with him because of it, but I knew that was unfair.
Nick sighed, pulling me close. "He just doesn't get it. He says I'm no fun anymore. We were drunk in Stockholm and we got into it and he said that you didn't let me do anything and I slugged him."
"So you ended up back in your room with Miss Sweden to show him you were still a stud?"
"Nothing happened with her! Really!"
I looked up at him. "The Swedish papers say otherwise, but I believe you, honey."
"It's the truth."
I smiled at him. "If you try to convince me any more, I might think you have a guilty conscience, so stop while you're ahead."
He laughed. "Okay. How did you read the Swedish papers?"
"They're online, bunny."
"In Swedish!"
"There are sites that translate things online, too. And then they're really funny. I emailed you some links."
"Oh yeah. I guess I " He looked guilty, and I considered him.
"Were you trying to prove to Vinnie that you didn't have to return all my calls and emails?"
"No, I you were busy lots of times when I called."
I scowled at him. "We're both busy people, Nick. But we used to make time for each other."
"I have nothing to prove to Vinnie, Rache. He doesn't understand that I'm happier with you than going out and getting drunk with him."
I kissed him, moving closer to him in the water. That was the right answer. "You're allowed to go out and get drunk with him and have fun with your friends."
"I'd rather have fun with you. Especially when you're wearing this skimpy bikini," he leered, looking down at my breasts as our legs touched under the water. I loved being with him like this. It felt naughty being nearly naked next to him in the hot tub with people around.
He kissed my neck, whispering to me. "I'm the luckiest guy on this boat, Rachel. Why are we wasting our alone time here in the hot tub?"
"That is a very good question."
Another good question was why it took us 20 minutes to get anywhere on this boat! It was a big ship, but we ended up getting stopped three times. I liked to be nice to the fans, but it was really getting tiring.
"Nick! Can I have your autograph?" I squealed as we were finally alone in our room. "You're my favorite. Where's Aaron?"
"Shut up," he growled, pinning me against our door and kissing me deeply. It was chilly in here, the air conditioning cooling my damp suit and towel. The heat of his body felt good against me. I slipped my arms around his shoulders and he pulled me up into his arms. After lots of fumbling with our door he stumbled inside, dropping me onto the bed. "Strip."
I couldn't help but laugh. "Was that a command?"
He nodded before going over to the dresser and rummaging around for the condoms. "When I turn around, I want you naked and ready."
"You know, that sort of foreplay is really not getting you any."
He turned around and frowned as he found me lying on the bed, my bikini still firmly tied around my breasts. "Are you staying no to me, Rache?"
"I know, not a word you hear often, bunny. But a girl likes some romance."
He crossed the room in two steps, turning on the CD player. When Linkin Park blared out of the speakers, even he had to laugh. "Fuck! Where are your girl CDs?"
"Girl CDs?"
He scowled, "You know. That mellow shit. Romantic stuff Dido, you like her!" I could see the erection in his shorts, and I considered continuing to torture him.
Fuck it. Getting up, I found my CDs in my bag and pushed him back toward the bed, "Okay, my turn. Strip!"
"See I like you all commanding, Rache. Really turns a guy on."
I started the CD and turned around, untying my bikini top slowly as Nick recognized the song. The last time we'd heard this song together had probably been on his birthday. I liked it listen to it now, it brought back such delicious memories
He licked his bottom lip as I straddled him on the bed, pulling off his shorts just far enough to free his cock. "Awww were you cold in the hallway, baby?" I cooed, looking down at his erection. "Shall I warm you up?"
Throwing my bikini top across the room, I leaned down, slowly licking the head of his cock, getting him nice and wet, smiling as he grew under my lips. I loved having this effect on him. Before I knew it, he was moaning and holding onto my hair as I sucked him like a lollipop. Boys were so easy.
