Should I be worried that Rachel and Vinnie were spending so much time together? We'd been at this club for a couple of hours, and for most of that time, she'd been dancing with Vinnie.
That was just weird. I looked over the balcony of the VIP section, spotting them down on the floor. It was easy to find them, since she was wearing a bright pink tank top that she'd just bought today when we were out shopping.
She was the prettiest girl here. Her eyes sparkled as she laughed at something Vinnie had said, and her curls were everywhere.
There was nothing stopping me from dancing with her. I just didn't like to dance. I did enough of it on stage. Besides, then Tony would have no one to talk to. Well, except for the girls sitting with us.
Rachel was not going to be happy when she came back up here. But she was off dancing, and Tony and I could only talk so much. It would have been rude if I had said 'no' when these girls asked to sit with us.
"Excuse me, sir?"
I looked up. Was this guy in a suit talking to me? "Yes?"
"Are you Nick Carter?"
"Yes," I answered cautiously. Had my credit card been declined or something? We hadn't had that much to drink had we?
"Prince William would like to make your acquaintance."
Prince what? Who I looked across the room, and a blond guy raised a glass to me.
Shit. Rachel was going to die.
"Sure," I said, not sure what else to say. Did I have to bow or something? "I'd be honored."
That was good, right?
"Excellent. Would it be permissible for his party to join yours? You seem to have some extra seating."
Did we? Oh. I noticed there were no girls in his 'party'.
Had I just turned into a girl magnet for the Prince of freaking England? Kick ass.
"Great. No problem. Plenty of room."
The guy in a suit went back to Prince William, and I looked back over the railing, willing Rachel to look up. She would not want to miss this. But I would look like a total jerk if I leaned over the railing, calling her name.
"Mr. Carter?" a now-familiar voice asked, and I stood up, trying to look cool.
William put out his hand, and I shook it. "Wonderful to meet you. I quite enjoy your music."
He did not. No straight guy listened to Backstreet. He just wanted the girls. But I said thank you, and introduced him to Tony. The girls sitting with us were frozen in their seats, just staring up at him.
I might have been the magnet, but they had not looked at me like that. The last person that looked at me like that was one of Rachel's niece's friends back on Long Island. And she was ten.
No wonder he came over here. There was probably not a female in the world who would walk up to Prince William and introduce herself. He needed someone like me to break the ice.
I introduced them. Sarah and Marianne. Maybe. They didn't correct me, but I didn't think that I'd actually remembered their names. They would happily be Sarah and Marianne for Prince William.
William introduced me to his friends, and we all sat down, while the guy in a suit stood close by. I noticed a couple of others, too.
I didn't need security any more, but William always would just because of who his parents were. That had to suck.
Then again, his security got him over here, so that wasn't all bad.
His friends starting talking to the girls, and William smiled at me again. "What are you doing in London?"
"Recording. I'm working on a solo album."
"Excellent. Are you working with someone here?"
"Ever hear of Robbie Williams?" I had to remember that everyone outside of America had heard of Robbie. William nodded. Should I call him 'Bill'? The tabloids called him 'Wills,' but what did his friends call him?
Not that we were friends.
This was so going to be in the tabloids tomorrow, wasn't it? Better than Rachel and I having sex in the window of our hotel, I guess.
I'd had too much to drink.
"I'm, um, working with his partner. Guy Chambers."
"Guy's a lovely bloke. I've had the opportunity to meet him several times. Give him my best."
"Um sure." We were quiet for a second. "My girlfriend is going to be really pissed that she missed this."
He smiled. "Aren't you dating Rachel Connor? Tell her they need to do another tour here. I'd love to see Sudden Silence."
"Can't you just make them do that?"
He laughed. "I could request it, yes. Perhaps. It's usually just British bands that I get to order around. Tell her I'm a fan."
"She's here," I said. "Down there, dancing."
"Is she? Would you like to join her?"
Was he asking me to dance?
Did he really come over here to talk to me?
I didn't have to worry about it, because suddenly I heard her voice. "But I I belong to him! Why can't I sit down with my boyfriend?"
I started to get up, but William turned around, motioning to his bodyguard. "It's fine, Trevor. She's with Nick."
"Holy shit!" Rachel said, and then clapped a hand over her mouth. Evidently she'd had a couple more drinks while they were dancing.
William laughed, standing up and offering his hand. "Lovely to meet you, Ms. Connor. Nick and I were just talking about you."
Rachel shot me a look as William took her hand, kissing it lightly, and I shrugged. What was I supposed to do to warn her? It all happened pretty quickly.
"Nice to meet you, too. Prince William."
"William," he corrected her. Well, that mystery was solved. "I'm afraid I may have stolen your seat," he said, motioning to the chair he'd just been sitting in.
"No, it's fine," she said, glancing at the girls with us. "I'll sit with Nick." She perched on the arm of my chair, and I tried not to laugh. I hadn't been talking to Sarah and Marianne - or whatever their names were - before William had joined us. Well not much.
I sat down again, whispering to her. "Where's Vinnie?"
"Bathroom," she hissed back, and then smiled at William. Vinnie might not be back for ages. He always managed to find someone to talk to.
"We have a friend in common, William."
They did? Who the hell did Rachel know that
"Emma Evesham?" Rachel finished, just as I came up with it myself.
Em had done pictures of the royals? I guess I shouldn't be surprised. She'd done pictures of everyone.
"Absolutely," he said, smiling. "My mother loved Em. She always said she took such real, natural photos. That why Harry and I, at least, love to use her when we can."
"Em is very flattered by that. Nick and I were with her just this afternoon."
That felt like a month ago.
This is why we didn't have that baby. I wasn't ready to give this up yet. Sitting here in a loud club, Rachel sitting next to me and talking to the Prince of England. This was a very good night.
I snuggled up to Nick in the back of the cab. It was two in the morning, and I was freezing. "We have to be up in six hours to get our flight."
"Were you going to tell Prince fucking William that we had to get to bed?"
I laughed. "Um, no. He was very nice."
"Of course he was, Rache. He's been trained his whole life in small talk. I was glad to see he finally ended up with a girl."
"I'm too old for him, sweetie."
"Not you. Me!"
I looked up at him. "You?" Prince William was not gay. James would know. What time was it in New York? I could call him and ask.
"I swear he was hitting on me. He asked me to dance."
I snickered, resting my head on his shoulder again. "He's not gay, bunny. He's just British. It was a weird night, wasn't it?"
"Very. Why were you dancing with Vinnie?"
"Because he wanted to." Nick didn't want to dance, and Vinnie did. I understood why Anna had fallen in love with him now. He was funny and charming when he wasn't being a petulant brat.
"I'm not sure that I like it that you and Vinnie are friends."
"I'm far from friends with him, Nick." I looked up, kissing him. "Really."
Nick considered me for a moment, and then kissed me again. "He would hit on you just to fuck us up."
"He would." I had no doubt of that. "Which is why I'm not planning on getting any closer to him."
"You're not going to come out with me all of the time?"
"Um, no. Nights like this are fine once in a while, but not every other night the way you guys do."
"It's not "
"Sweetie, it's fine. Have fun with your friends when I'm not around. I don't expect you to sit around waiting for me to get back from tour or whatever."
He hugged me closer. "You are the perfect girlfriend."
"Think we should just make love all night, and sleep on the plane?"
He laughed. "I love you."
